Cayman’s young footballers to compete in inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup

The Cayman Islands boys’ under-15 national football team will compete in the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 24 to 30 October.

Led by head coach Ian Lindo, the team has been drawn in Group S alongside Iraq, Egypt, Trinidad and Tobago, Macau, China, and St Kitts and Nevis.

Cayman will open its campaign against Iraq at 2:30am Cayman time on Saturday, 24 October, before facing Egypt at 1:15am and Trinidad and Tobago at 8am on Sunday, 25 October.

The team will complete the opening round-robin stage against Macau, China, at midnight on Monday, 26 October, followed by a match against St Kitts and Nevis at 6:45am that day.

All group-stage matches will be played at the Hovsan Competition Complex in Baku.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our young players, and one that we are all looking forward to,” Lindo said in a Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) press release.

“To represent the Cayman Islands at a FIFA tournament and compete against countries from different parts of the world is something special.”

He said the team wanted to embrace the experience, play with confidence and demonstrate its abilities, adding that exposure to different playing styles and the demands of international competition would be valuable for the players’ development.

The squad comprises Alex McAuliffe, Caelan Foreshaw, Eric McField, Kale Merriott, Kenardenio Henry, Keshawn Brown, Kupakwashe Mutomba, Liam Forrest, Luke Watson, Marvin Hinds Jr, Samuel Morrison, Trey Lewy, Trey Webster and Xavi Tibbetts.

The new tournament is designed to expand access to international football for young players and provide competitive opportunities at a key stage of their development.

Matches will be played in an eight-a-side format, with two 20-minute halves on smaller pitches.

The format is intended to increase players’ involvement, encourage technical development and give them more opportunities to make decisions on the ball.

Following the opening round-robin stage, teams will be placed into one of six competitive tiers based on their results.

All teams will continue playing during the tournament stage, which runs from 28 to 30 October, ensuring further international experience regardless of their initial results.

The event is expected to involve about 190 FIFA member associations and nearly 1,000 matches, making it one of the largest youth football competitions organised by FIFA.
