Dozens of onlookers watched as two green sea turtles were released into the wild to celebrate World Sea Turtle Day.
The marine animals were let go on Governor’s Beach on 16 June by the Cayman Turtle Centre, in one of three yearly public events.
They were part of the centre’s ‘Head Start Release’ initiative, which sees the turtles raised in captivity for a couple of years to allow for their shell to harden and lower their risk of being eaten by predators.
The centre aims to release around 500 turtles a year and says it has released more than 36,000 since it opened in the 1960s.
There are four species of turtle living in Cayman waters, with three nesting on the islands – green, hawksbill and loggerhead.
