Public turtle release to mark World Sea Turtle Day

The public is invited to watch as green sea turtles are released into the wild to celebrate World Sea Turtle Day in Grand Cayman.

The Cayman Turtle Centre is holding its annual public release at Governor’s Beach on Monday, 16 June, from 10am.

The annual event is free and open to all.

The centre says it has released more than 36,000 centre-bred green sea turtles, from hatchings to yearlings, into the ocean since it was first established in 1968.

It says on its website: “Since the centre began local turtle releases, the sightings of green sea turtles by divers and residents living along the coast have become more common.

“Turtles released in the Cayman Islands have also been recorded in Cuba, Barbados, Grenada, Honduras, Venezuela, South-Eastern United States, Panama, Belize, Nicaragua, and Mexico.

“These results suggest that the centre’s release programme can potentially benefit the wider Caribbean as well as the Cayman Islands.”

It added that studies show that almost all the nesting wild green sea turtles in Cayman waters are related to those from the centre.
