Opposition leader Joey Hew calls for unity and accountability

In his first address as leader of the opposition, George Town North MP Joseph ‘Joey’ Hew called for unity and thanked his supporters.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, he also reaffirmed the opposition’s commitment to serve with “dedication and integrity”.

Hew acknowledged the outcome of the 30 April general election, noting that the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) won seven seats – the largest secured by any single party.

He contrasted this with the Cayman Islands National Party (CINP) and The Caymanian Community Party (TCCP), which each won four seats, along with four independents.

“Once again, it is negotiations and not the clear will of the people that have shaped the formation of our government,” Hew said.

Despite the disappointment of not forming the government, Hew’s speech was measured and forward-looking.

“While it would be easy to dwell on the disappointment, that is not why I stand here today,” he said.

“Instead, I rise with a heart full of gratitude and a spirit renewed by the resilience of our people.”

Hew thanked the more than 5,000 voters who supported the Progressives, along with party volunteers, his family, and his team members – both elected and unelected.

He offered specific thanks to his wife and two sons, acknowledging the toll of four election campaigns and the emotional strain of public life.

“To my family… I thank you for your unwavering support and shared commitment to our country,” he said.

He also extended congratulations to the newly elected MPs, stating: “Our opponents, congratulations on your success.

“I extend my sincere hope that we lead with wisdom, fairness, and deep commitment to the values that unite us.”

Hew pledged that the opposition would fulfil its constitutional role with focus and resolve.

“We shall not waver nor falter in our duties as the opposition,” he said. “I will continue to serve as your advocate, your representative, and your champion.

“I will hold the government to account wherever necessary, and work with them wherever possible.”

In closing, Hew invoked a message of democratic strength and national unity.

“Though we may have different visions and ideas, our shared goal remains the same – a brighter, more inclusive, and more prosperous Cayman Islands for us all.”

Parliament resumed this week following the 2025 general election.

Joey Hew was confirmed as leader of the opposition, with Kenneth Bryan (George Town Central) appointed as deputy opposition leader.

The government is led by Premier André Ebanks of The Caymanian Community Party, heading a coalition of TCCP, CINP, and independent members.
