Rotary donates $10,000 to support blood donation bus

Rotary Central Cayman Islands has donated about CI$10,000 to the Cayman Islands Blood Bank to support new equipment for its Mobile Blood Donation Bus.

The donation funded the purchase of two key pieces of equipment that will be used during mobile and off-site blood drives, helping to improve the efficiency, safety and accessibility of blood collection services across the island.

One of the items purchased is a Genesis Rapid Seal II Tube Sealer, which seals blood collection tubing in about one second, allowing donated blood to be prepared quickly and safely for testing and patient use.

The second is a Genesis Blood Collection Mixer, which gently and consistently mixes blood during donation to ensure safe collection.

The mixer allows staff to preset collection volumes and includes alerts if blood flow slows.

Both devices are lightweight and portable, making them well suited for use on the mobile blood donation bus.

Since the official handover of the Mobile Blood Collection Unit in June 2025, the Cayman Islands Blood Bank has conducted nine blood drives using the bus.

It has helped to bring donation services directly into communities and workplaces and expand opportunities for residents to donate.

Judith Clarke, laboratory manager at the Cayman Islands Blood Bank and Health Services Authority (HSA) Pathology Laboratory, said the donation has already made a difference.

“This generous contribution from Rotary Central Cayman Islands has had an immediate and practical impact on our mobile blood collection services,” Clarke said in an HSA press release.

“The equipment enhances efficiency, improves workflow for our staff and helps ensure a safe and positive experience for donors, particularly during off-site blood drives.”

Rotary Central Cayman Islands has long supported blood donation and public health initiatives, including the donation of the Mobile Blood Collection Unit last year, the release said.

More information about blood donation or scheduling a mobile blood drive is available at bloodbank.ky or by calling the Cayman Islands Blood Bank at (345) 244-2674.
