A new community-driven effort has been introduced to increase household-level food security and sustainable gardening in the Cayman Islands.
The Backyard Garden Programme Pilot Initiative provides participating households with free grow boxes, soil, seeds and basic guidance on how to start their own backyard garden.
It is being delivered by the Ministry of Planning, Lands, Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure in partnership with the Department of Agriculture.
The programme targets a wide range of Caymanians – from retirees and families to urban residents and eco-conscious young people.
In a government press release on 31 July, agriculture minister Jay Ebanks said: “We believe food security begins at home.
“By equipping individuals and families with the tools to grow even a small portion of their own produce, we’re investing in a more resilient, self-sufficient future.”
Applications opened on 31 July and will remain open until 30 August or until supplies last. Application forms can be filled in here.
The ministry encourages all eligible Caymanians to apply early and be part of a growing movement toward sustainability.
