The Cayman Islands ombudsman has introduced YouTube channel to help the public understand its rights and the services available through the independent oversight office.
The official launch on 9 October coincided with Ombuds Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October.
This year’s theme, ‘Office of options’, highlights the ombudsman’s role in promoting fairness, transparency and accountability.
Established by parliament in 2017, the Office of the Ombudsman provides free, confidential and impartial services across five areas.
They are government complaints involving maladministration, police complaints, freedom of information appeals, data protection and whistleblower protection.
The new channel features short videos explaining the office’s services and the rights and protections available to the public, including guidance on freedom of information and data protection.
According to the ombudsman’s 2025 Annual Report, the office answered 372 inquiries, received 389 cases and resolved 398.
Decisions, investigation reports and other outcomes are published on the office’s website.
The office said its work provides pathways to resolution through guidance, mediation, investigations and independent reviews, helping people seek answers and challenge decisions where appropriate.
The ombudsman has also been raising awareness of freedom of information rights following Right to Know Day on 28 September.
It has used local radio and social media to explain its role in the freedom of information process and provide practical guidance on exercising rights under the Freedom of Information Act.
The office said public education was an important part of its wider mandate, alongside responding to complaints and protecting individual rights.
Independent oversight also helps improve administrative practices, strengthen systems and build public confidence in institutions, it added.
Members of the public can find the new videos here or by searching for ‘Ombudsman Cayman Islands’ on YouTube.
More information about the office and its services is available on its website.
