The Cayman Islands is navigating a pivotal political moment following the general elections held on April 30, 2025. With no single party securing an outright majority in the 19-seat Parliament, the formation of a coalition government has become essential.
Independent candidates Isaac Rankine, Jay Ebanks, Chris Saunders and Rolston Anglin now hold the balance of power. Among them, veteran politician Anglin, who reclaimed his seat in West Bay North, is seen as a pivotal figure in the coalition discussions. Anglin has not publicly indicated which party he may support, making his decision crucial to the formation of the next government.
Independent candidate Chris Saunders, who won re-election in Bodden Town West, has confirmed that several of the 13 independent candidates are already in discussions to form a coalition government. “We don’t want a repeat of what the country went through last time,” Saunders recently stated publicly, emphasizing the need for a stable administration.
The TCCP and CINP are reportedly in talks to form a coalition, which would bring their combined total to eight seats. Securing the support of at least two independent members, including Anglin, would be necessary to establish a majority. Conversely, the PPM is also seeking alliances with independents to bolster its numbers.
With the leader of the CINP, Dan Scott, losing to the incumbent Julianna O’Connor Connolly in Cayman Brac East, it is unclear who will lead their team in discussions to form the coalition government.
As the political landscape remains fluid, the formation of the new government hinges on the decisions of independent members. The coming days are expected to be filled with negotiations as parties vie for the support needed to lead the Cayman Islands into its next chapter.
