The Cayman Islands Government is exploring the use of modular bridges, flyovers and elevated road systems as it looks for ways to address traffic bottlenecks and boost transport resilience.
The Ministry of Planning, Lands, Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure (PLAHI), together with the National Roads Authority (NRA), has issued an expression of interest seeking companies with experience in modular and prefabricated transport infrastructure.
The exercise is intended to gather information from the market and does not form part of a formal procurement process.
According to the document, the government wants to better understand the types of technologies, engineering considerations and delivery models currently available for transport projects in island environments.
The expression of interest focuses on modular, lightweight and prefabricated systems designed for coastal and tropical conditions.
Officials said they are particularly interested in infrastructure that can reduce excavation, limit disruption in environmentally sensitive areas and be installed more quickly than traditional road construction methods.
The document identifies several possible applications, including modular bridges or flyovers at major traffic bottlenecks and elevated transport routes through low-lying or environmentally sensitive areas.
Government officials are also seeking information on rapid-deployment infrastructure systems that could be used to support emergency response efforts and post-disaster recovery operations following severe weather events.
Interested firms are being encouraged to participate in site visits and preliminary discussions in Cayman between mid-June and mid-August.
The government also clarified that the process is not intended to collect detailed technical proposals or engineering designs at this stage.
Instead, officials said the exercise is intended to support preliminary discussions, field observations and feasibility-related engagement with infrastructure providers as the government explores possible future transport infrastructure options.
According to the document, participating firms will be responsible for all costs related to the process, including travel, accommodation, technical assessments and site visits.
