Google Street View update planned for Grand Cayman

The Grand Cayman road network could soon receive its first major Google Street View refresh in years as the National Roads Authority (NRA) moves to update 360-degree imagery.

The NRA has issued a request for proposals seeking contractors to capture new road imagery for Google Street View, Google Maps and Google Earth.

The proposed work would cover public roads across districts including West Bay, George Town, Bodden Town, North Side and East End.

Gated communities and private strata developments are excluded unless separate permission is granted.

Much of the current Street View imagery visible in Grand Cayman dates back more than a decade, with some areas still showing captures from 2013 and 2014.

Google Maps and Google Earth imagery has been updated in phases since then, but image dates continue to vary across the island.

The NRA said the updated imagery would support infrastructure monitoring and roadside asset management.

Under the tender, contractors must also propose systems capable of identifying roadside features such as streetlights, power poles, traffic signs, lane markings, manhole covers, crosswalks and speed humps.

The agency specified that imagery must be captured in at least 4K resolution to allow roadway features to be clearly identified and analysed.

Bidders are required to provide all labour, vehicles, equipment, software and operational support needed for the project.

Companies must also submit implementation plans and demonstrate previous experience with Google Street View-related work.

As part of the technical evaluation, bidders must explain how they would maintain image quality and data accuracy, resolve upload issues and secure confirmation from Google that Street View Studio support for 360-degree video uploads will remain available through 2026 and 2027.

According to the tender timetable, questions from bidders must be submitted by 29 May, while proposals are due by 5pm on 5 June.

The NRA expects to identify a successful bidder by 10 June and execute a contract by 19 June. The proposed agreement would run for 12 months.
