The government will carry out its annual storm season preparations across Grand Cayman today, 7 May.
Hurricane shutters will be installed on more on more than 100 government buildings and 16 designated hurricane shelters.
There will then be post-installation tests to make sure they’re all secure. Stand-by generators will also be tested.
The Public Works Department, National Roads Authority and Department of Vehicle and Equipment Services will all be involved.
Several statutory authorities are expected to secure their own facilities today as well.
Joanna Virtue-Markman, acting director of the Public Works Department, said: “This annual drill ensures that people, property, and critical services are as protected as possible.
“We encourage all residents to use the exercise as a reminder to review their own hurricane plans.”
The government encourages residents to decide what materials they will use to cover windows and glass doors, where to obtain those materials and how to install them.
Anyone who thinks their home could be unsafe in a hurricane should identify an alternative shelter in advance.
Atlantic Hurricane Season begins on 1 June and continues until 30 November, with its peak from August to October.
Cayman Islands Government public shelters will open on the advice of the National Hazard Management Council before any significant weather threat.
