Kerry Powery becomes director general of National Weather Service

Kerry Powery is now director general of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS).

He takes over from John Tibbetts following his retirement after more than 41 years with the organisation.

Powery, who had served as chief meteorologist since 2014, assumed his new position yesterday, 1 September, following an internal recruitment process.

He began his career in the Aeronautical Information Services Unit of the Civil Aviation Authority in July 1995 before starting meteorological training in January 1997.

He formally joined the Weather Service as a qualified forecaster in 1998.

In a government press release, Samuel Rose, chief officer in the Cabinet Office, said Powery was well known in the Cayman Islands and respected across the region.

“The change in leadership represents a significant milestone for the CINWS and ensures organisational continuity,” Rose said.

“His depth of institutional knowledge and steady leadership give us every confidence in the National Weather Service’s future.”

Premier André Ebanks congratulated Powery, describing his progression through the organisation as an example of home-grown talent and expertise.

“Having dedicated more than two decades to the National Weather Service, he brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of its operations to the role,” Ebanks said.

He added that Powery’s leadership would support the service’s work providing information that contributes to public safety and national resilience.

Tibbetts, who worked alongside Powery for about 28 years, said his successor had already demonstrated his ability to lead the organisation.

“Kerry has stepped into the role of acting director general on numerous occasions, demonstrating the leadership and experience needed to guide the service forward,” Tibbetts said.

“I am confident that the National Weather Service is in capable hands, and I wish Kerry every success.”

Powery said he was grateful for the opportunity and paid tribute to Tibbetts and his predecessor, Fred Sambula, for their guidance during his career.

“I am honoured to take on the role of director general and grateful for the confidence placed in me,” he said.

“I look forward to working with our dedicated team to build on our strong foundation and ensure we continue to meet the needs of our community.”
