Cayman Islands National Weather Service director general John Tibbetts will retire at the end of August after over 41 years in the public sector.
Tibbetts joined the former Department of Civil Aviation in 1985 as a weather observer in the Aviation Weather Office, which has since become the Civil Aviation Authority of the Cayman Islands.
Over his career, he progressed through roles including operational weather forecaster and chief meteorologist before becoming director general in 2014, following the retirement of longtime director Fred Sambula.
During his tenure, Tibbetts oversaw the expansion and modernisation of the National Weather Service, including improvements to forecasting capabilities, observation systems, technology and staffing.
He also helped develop the service’s role in national preparedness and emergency response, including during major weather events such as hurricanes Gilbert, Mitch and Ivan.
Cabinet secretary Samuel Rose described Tibbetts’ career as an example of the “very best” of Cayman’s civil service.
“Throughout his career, he has demonstrated exceptional professionalism, passion, and leadership, helping to build a National Weather Service that plays a vital role in safeguarding our islands,” Rose said in a government press release.
Chief meteorologist Kerry Powery said Tibbetts had also played an important role in developing the service’s staff and future meteorologists.
“His vision, guidance and unwavering commitment have laid a strong foundation for the future, and we are proud to continue building on the legacy he leaves behind,” Powery said.
Reflecting on his career, Tibbetts said it had been a privilege to witness the transformation of the service from a small aviation weather office into a national organisation.
“I do so with immense pride in what we have achieved together and every confidence that the service will continue to grow, innovate and serve the people of the Cayman Islands for many years to come,” he said.
The National Weather Service is continuing to invest in technology and staffing, while working towards continuous 24-hour weather observation and forecasting, according to the release.
Its new headquarters is also expected to be completed later this year.
Premier André Ebanks thanked Tibbetts for his decades of service, saying his contribution had helped strengthen Cayman’s national resilience and ensure generations of residents had access to accurate and trusted weather information.
Powery will become director general designate before taking over as director general on 1 September.
