Sonji Myles has been appointed chief executive officer of the Utility Regulation and Competition Office (URCO).
The Cayman Islands utility regulator said the former interim chief executive officer’s appointment followed a competitive recruitment process and takes effect immediately.
In a press release on 7 August, URCO’s board said the recruitment process followed its established recruitment and governance procedures.
It determined that Myles had the leadership, expertise and strategic vision needed to guide the organisation through its next phase of development.
Myles has led the regulator on an interim basis while continuing work on its regulatory priorities.
According to the board, he has provided “steady leadership” and strengthened operational performance during that period.
Samuel Jackson, chair of URCO’s board of directors, said Myles demonstrated “exceptional leadership, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to the organisation’s mandate” during the recruitment process and his time as acting chief executive officer.
“We are confident that he will continue to strengthen URCO and serve the people of the Cayman Islands with integrity and professionalism,” Jackson said.
Myles said he was grateful for the board’s confidence and would work with URCO staff, stakeholders and partners to strengthen the regulator and uphold its responsibilities.
“A key part of that commitment is ensuring we continue to hold regulated utility providers to account where necessary,” he said.
Myles said URCO must ensure regulated providers meet their obligations while protecting consumers’ interests and maintaining confidence in essential public services.
The office said it remains committed to governance, regulatory standards and service to the people of Cayman.
