Cayman Islands Blood Bank relaunches website to boost donations

The Cayman Islands Blood Bank has relaunched bloodbank.ky following World Blood Donor Day, introducing a redesigned website that aims to make it easier for residents to book appointments, check eligibility and learn how to donate blood.

The website now serves as the Blood Bank’s central online hub, offering information on the donation process, platelet donation, community blood supply levels and upcoming initiatives.

Residents can also register as platelet donors and apply to host blood drives through their workplace, organisation or community.

The relaunch aligns with the 2026 World Blood Donor Day theme, ‘One drop of humanity. Give blood. Save lives’, according to a Health Services Authority (HSA) press release on 28 June.

The annual observance, held on 14 June, recognises voluntary blood donors and highlights the continuing need for safe and reliable blood supplies.

Judith Clarke, HSA pathology laboratory and Blood Bank manager, said the updated platform is designed to make the donation process more accessible for both first-time and returning donors.

“Every unit of blood represents someone choosing to help another person, often someone they may never meet,” Clarke said in the press release.

“That donation could support a patient in surgery, a mother experiencing complications during childbirth, someone receiving cancer treatment or a person brought in after an emergency.

“With bloodbank.ky, we want to make those first steps feel easier by helping residents understand what to expect, book their appointment at their convenience and feel confident and informed about becoming a donor.”

The website provides guidance on what donors can expect before, during and after giving blood, outlines donor eligibility requirements and allows users to register to become platelet donors.

It will also be used to support future Blood Bank programmes, including mobile blood collection and community donor engagement.

As the hurricane season continues, the Blood Bank is encouraging people with O-positive and O-negative blood types to book appointments to help maintain local supplies.

According to the Blood Bank, O-positive is the most frequently used blood type because it can be safely given to anyone regardless of the patient’s blood type, while O-negative is reserved for emergency situations when a patient’s blood type is unknown.

The service said it continues to monitor local blood supplies to ensure transfusions remain available when needed.

The Blood Bank has collected 710 units of blood so far in 2026, while about 3.2% of the population are active donors.

On average, it requires about 200 units each month to meet demand across the healthcare system.

The annual observance also recognised the contribution of long-serving blood donors, with the late Peter Wight honoured posthumously this year.

Wight began donating blood on 25 September 1967 and donated a total of 81 units before his final donation on 8 November 2018.

“My father believed in quietly doing his part to help others,” said Jeffrey Wight, Peter Wight’s son.

“Our family is grateful that his contribution to the Blood Bank is being remembered, and we hope his example encourages others to donate blood in his honour.”

HSA chief executive officer Lizzette Yearwood said: “Mr Wight’s commitment reminds us that one person’s quiet, consistent act of service can touch many lives over time.

“We are honoured to recognise his contribution and deeply grateful to every donor who continues to give of themselves freely to help patients, families and our wider community.”
