The Cayman Islands will stage its first-ever Heritage Month this May, with cultural events, performances and community gatherings planned across Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.
Announced by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage, the observance will run under the theme, ‘Threads to our traditions’ and pull together a slate of independently organised activities into a single national programme.
The ministry said the initiative aims to spotlight the stories, traditions and cultural expressions tied to Caymanian identity, offering residents a shared platform to mark the country’s heritage.
Emancipation Day, observed this year on 4 May, will fall within the month-long schedule. The ministry said the day, which marks a defining chapter in Cayman’s history, will retain its standing in the national calendar.
Heritage showcases, live performances, community events and educational sessions are among the activities slated for the month, hosted by a mix of local partners and organisations on both islands.
While community groups will run the individual events, the ministry will act as coordinator, curating the overall programme to ensure each activity ties into a unified account of Caymanian identity.
Isaac Rankine, minister for youth, sports, culture and heritage, framed the launch as a step towards deepening how residents engage with their cultural roots.
“Heritage Month represents an important step in strengthening how we celebrate and understand our identity as a people,” he said in a press release.
“It is an opportunity not only to showcase our culture, but to reflect on the traditions, stories and experiences that have shaped us as a nation.”
Residents across both islands have been invited to take part in the scheduled activities throughout May.
