Five esteemed and gifted musicians will perform five concerts as part of the Sonoro Cayman Islands chamber music festival the first week of April.
The Sonoro festival was first held in Bucharest, Romania in 2006 as a way of revitalising the chamber music genre. Since then, the festival has expanded to venues across Romania and Europe, and in April 2024, launched in the Cayman Islands.
Returning to perform for a second time are Romanian violinist and Sonoro co-founder Razvan Popovici and Moldovan violinist Alexandra Tirsu, who plays a 1717 ‘Reifenberg’ Antonio Stradivari violin on loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago.
Joining them this year are French violinist Nicolas Dautricourt, Belarusian cellist Kyril Zlotnikov and Brazilian pianist Cristian Budu. Nigerian-Caymanian pianist and Cayman Arts Festival Artistic Director Glen Inanga will also perform with the group at some of the concerts.
Sonoro will perform three private and two public concerts during this year’s festival, and each will have a different theme. The first public concert, themed “Latin World,” will take place on 3 April at The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. The festival’s finale, which is also open to the public, will take place at the Elmslie Memorial United Church on 5 April and is themed “Fairy Tales.” The final concert will feature the works of composers Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert.
During their stay here, the Sonoro musicians will also perform a charity concert for the Pink Ladies organisation, a concert for school students and a private fundraiser for Cayman Arts Festival. They will also present masterclasses for school students during the week.
