The Commission for Standards in Public Life (CSPL) has launched a year-long campaign to promote good governance and seek public feedback on proposed legislative changes.
The Good Governance Campaign 2026, launched in partnership with Governor Jane Owen and Premier André Ebanks, will feature media interviews, community discussions, stakeholder meetings and public education events under the theme, ‘Good governance begins with us’.
A key element of the campaign will be a public consultation on proposed amendments to the Standards in Public Life Act, with the commission seeking community feedback before finalising recommendations for legislative reform.
Commission chairman Woody Foster said the initiative is intended to encourage a national conversation about the values that underpin public life.
“Good governance is not an ultimate ideal state we hope to achieve – it is a standard each of us must choose to uphold, every day, in every decision,” Foster said in a CSPL press release.
“The Good Governance Campaign is an invitation to every person in the Cayman Islands to be part of that commitment.”
Established under the Cayman Islands Constitution, the Commission for Standards in Public Life promotes integrity, accountability and ethical conduct among people in public office.
Its responsibilities include overseeing codes of conduct, maintaining the Register of Interests, supporting the management of conflicts of interest and investigating alleged breaches of the Standards in Public Life Act.
During the campaign, the commission will focus on topics including ethical leadership, accountability, appointments to public boards, the Register of Interests, the Parliamentary Code of Conduct and proposed amendments to the legislation.
Owen said the initiative will help strengthen confidence in public institutions.
“The Cayman Islands has built its success on the trust of its people and the confidence of the world,” she said.
“That trust is sustained through the highest standards of integrity, transparency and accountability in public life.”
Premier André Ebanks said the campaign reflects the government’s commitment to improving governance.
“I welcome the commission’s work to strengthen the Standards in Public Life Act, and I encourage every Caymanian to take part in shaping it,” he said.
The campaign will conclude with a public briefing outlining the consultation findings and the commission’s recommendations for changes to the legislation.
