The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service handled 37,866 incidents during 2023, according to an annual report tabled in parliament on 5 November.
Deputy Governor Franz Manderson presented the Office of the Commissioner of Police’s 2023 report, revealing the service recorded 3,955 crimes and made 2,177 arrests that year.
The report showed police recovered 23 firearms and seized drugs worth more than CI$900,000.
Officers conducted 311 digital and cyber-related investigations during the period, Manderson said.
Domestic violence referrals reached 2,001 cases, while child protection referrals totalled 1,799.
Police investigated 1,469 acquisitive crimes, 770 violence against the person crimes and 781 public order crimes.
Road safety statistics revealed concerning figures, with 423 people injured in motor vehicle accidents across the islands.
Police responded to 3,186 motor vehicle accidents and issued 4,654 speeding tickets.
Officers arrested 270 people for driving under the influence during 2023, Manderson told parliament, calling the figure “unfortunate”.
“This is just a snapshot of the work that’s being done by our RCIPS,” the deputy governor said.
He paid tribute to Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton and his team for their work keeping the community safe.
Manderson advised parliament that the 2024 annual report should be tabled shortly.
He added that he would provide more details about the police service’s work during his upcoming budget contribution.
