From Cayman to California: The Bluff makes its world premiere

The world premiere of The Bluff, a pirate action thriller by Caymanian filmmaker Frank E Flowers, was held in California, marking the feature film’s official debut.

The screening took place at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on 17 February, drawing a packed audience of industry professionals, invited guests and supporters.

A Cayman Islands government delegation, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage, travelled to the event.

The visitors included the Isaac Rankine, minister for youth, sports, culture and heritage, chief officer Teresa Echenique and Christopher Saunders, MP, along with other ministry officials.

While in Los Angeles, the delegation toured AGBO Studios, where they viewed props and production materials from The Bluff and other major film projects.

The visit offered insight into the filmmaking process and provided an opportunity to engage with members of the production team.

In a government press release, Rankine said it was an honour to represent Cayman at the world premiere.

“Seeing a Caymanian filmmaker achieve success on the international stage is inspiring and demonstrates what is possible for our young people who aspire to have careers in creative industries,” he said.

“I am proud of the example Frank E Flowers has set for the next generation of creatives.”

Two years ago, the ministry facilitated a familiarisation trip to Cayman Brac for the film’s lead actress, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and members of the production team.

The group learnt about Caymanian culture and met with members of the community in an effort to help ensure authenticity.

The Bluff is set in the Caribbean in the 19th century and tells the story of a former female pirate (Chopra Jones) forced to protect her family when her dangerous past resurfaces.

Much of the film was shot in Australia, but some scenes were shot at Skull Cave and The Bluff in Cayman Brac, helping to establish the story’s Caribbean setting.

The Bluff is scheduled to be available globally on Prime Video on 25 February. Watch the trailer here.
