Event to spotlight hidden workplace health costs of sedentary lifestyles

A wellness expert is set to challenge traditional thinking about workplace productivity at an upcoming Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce event.

Laura Ribbins, CEO of Fitness Connection and creator of the ‘Body Debt’ wellness concept, will lead the Lunch and Learn, titled ‘Body debt: The hidden cost of sitting on your business’.

The free event on 18 June will explore how modern work habits, particularly sedentary office-based roles, can affect energy levels, focus and overall workplace effectiveness.

Ribbins, who has led Fitness Connection, a fitness facility in South Sound, for more than three decades, said recent local health data highlights the need for greater attention to employee wellbeing.

Citing findings from the Cayman Islands STEPS 2023 report, she noted that most residents have at least one health risk factor and that overall health indicators have shown little improvement over the past decade.

“The reality is that many employees may be operating below their full potential without realising it,” Ribbins said in a chamber press release.

Her Body Debt concept describes the cumulative impact of prolonged sitting, limited physical activity and lifestyle imbalances.

According to Ribbins, the effects can include fatigue, reduced concentration, lower resilience and decreased engagement at work.

“Most people don’t realise they’re accumulating what I call Body Debt every single day through prolonged sitting, stress and lack of movement,” she said.

“The good news is that small, consistent changes can dramatically improve energy, focus, productivity and long-term health.”

The session will also address the view that “sitting is the new smoking”, examining the health risks associated with sedentary work environments and the steps organisations can take to mitigate them.

Attendees will receive practical guidance on improving daily movement habits, understanding the connection between physical wellbeing and workplace performance, and implementing simple strategies to boost energy and focus.

An interactive movement exercise will also form part of the programme.

The chamber says the event is aimed at business owners, managers and professionals working in desk-based roles who are seeking practical ways to improve both employee wellbeing and organisational performance.

It runs from noon to 1pm at the Chamber Conference Room in Governor’s Square. A light lunch will be provided.

Registration is available through the Chamber of Commerce website here.
