The National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) has met with Cayman Islands insurers to confirm coverage for e-bikes, scooters and other micromobility devices ahead of a rider clampdown.
The committee said the meeting followed public concerns that owners could not obtain the insurance required under the Traffic Law before 16 January.
In a press release on 12 January, the committee said insurance is currently available through Indigo Insurance, with additional insurers expected to join in the coming days and weeks.
They are offering policies for micromobility devices that meet legal requirements when those devices are properly registered and licensed.
Government has stressed that the rules being enforced from 16 January are not new laws, but existing requirements that already apply when e-bikes and scooters are used on public roads.
Riders must be at least 17 years old, hold a valid Category 0 or Category 2 driver’s licence, and ensure their devices are registered, licensed and insured.
National Roads Authority chief executive officer Edward Howard said the aim is not to stop people using e-bikes and scooters, but “to ensure that they are operated safely, responsibly and in full compliance with the law”.
Under the Rules of the Road, e-bike and scooter users must obey traffic signals, signs and road markings and ride only where the law allows, just like other motor vehicles.
It applies to both privately owned and rented devices and covers anyone using public roads, including visitors and tourists.
The NRSC launched a public education campaign on 19 December to give riders time to understand their responsibilities and become compliant before enforcement starts.
The committee said the focus is on clarity, safety and compliance, but warned that from 16 January any enforcement action would be handled in accordance with the law.
Penalties may include fines, prosecution and disqualification from driving.
