Premier André Ebanks is set to travel to Asia this month as part of a government push to strengthen international partnerships and promote the Cayman Islands’ financial services sector.
The visit aims to reinforce business relationships, provide updates on Cayman’s regulatory and financial services framework, and establish new connections in key Asian markets.
Ebanks, who also serves as financial services and commerce minister, is scheduled to meet with regulators, government representatives, law firms, fund managers and other industry stakeholders.
This will take place during stops in Hong Kong from 7 to 9 May followed by engagements in Shanghai and Tokyo. The trip will conclude on 15 May.
The premier will be accompanied by Gene DaCosta, the Cayman Islands Government overseas representative to Asia, and Sean Whewell, Cabinet Office international affairs analyst.
Speaking in a press release ahead of the visit on 1 May, Ebanks said direct engagement with stakeholders remains critical to maintaining the jurisdiction’s global standing.
“These visits are an important step in solidifying our relationships and reinforcing Cayman’s position as a globally respected financial services centre of excellence,” he said.
“Engaging directly with stakeholders fosters open dialogue and provides valuable feedback on how we can continue to meet their needs and maintain confidence in our financial services products.”
The trip marks Ebanks’ first official visit to Asia since taking office as premier, although he has previously travelled to the region in his former role as deputy premier and financial services minister.
During his absence from 5 to 15 May, Gary Rutty will serve as acting premier, with Katherine Ebanks-Wilks as acting deputy premier, and Wayne Panton as acting minister for financial services and commerce.
The government said the visit reflects Cayman’s continued focus on maintaining strong ties with international partners and supporting the long-term growth of its financial services industry.
