Cayman Islands law firm Campbells has advised global cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp by Robinhood on securing a virtual asset service provider (VASP) licence in the British Virgin Islands.
Bitstamp by Robinhood received approval from the BVI Financial Services Commission to operate as a VASP through its BVI-registered entity, Bitstamp Global Ltd.
This allowed it to offer exchange, safekeeping and transfer services for virtual assets under BVI’s Virtual Assets Service Providers Act, according to a press release on 27 January.
Campbells, which has a substantial blockchain and fintech practice in Cayman, said its team led the regulatory strategy, licence application and engagement with the BVI regulator as part of the project.
The Campbells team advising on the licence application was led by BVI-based partners Guy Williamson and Richard Spencer, working alongside members of the firm’s wider fintech team.
The firm said the authorisation of Bitstamp by Robinhood, described as a globally recognised digital asset exchange, underscores the BVI’s position as a regulated jurisdiction for virtual asset service providers seeking an internationally aligned licensing framework.
Campbells’ blockchain and fintech practice, led by fintech partner Richard Spencer, regularly advises cryptocurrency exchanges, token issuers and investment funds on cross-border virtual asset structures.
