The Cayman Islands hosted a regional meeting focused on efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing on 1 and 2 October.
The Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) held its 18th Council of Ministers Meeting, bringing together Caribbean ministers, attorneys general, senior officials and representatives.
Premier and financial services minister André Ebanks and Attorney General Samuel Bulgin gave welcome remarks at the meeting held at Kimpton Seafire Resort and Spa.
It was then opened by CFATF chair Wilfred Abrahams and Financial Action Task Force (FATF) president Giles Thomson.
Delegates discussed a range of issues, including updates on the FATF’s fifth-round Mutual Evaluation Programme.
CFATF is responsible for implementing and monitoring the FATF’s global standards on money laundering and terrorist financing across the Caribbean region.
The meeting comes as Cayman prepares for its own assessment against the FATF standards, which CFATF is due to conduct in December 2027.
In a press release, Ebanks said the meeting provided a timely opportunity to discuss the standards that jurisdictions across the region are expected to meet.
“It was a privilege for the Cayman Islands to welcome our regional partners for this important meeting, and we are pleased to have offered to continue in this role for future meetings,” he said.
“As we look ahead to our own assessment, this week’s discussions are a timely reminder of the shared standards to which we all hold ourselves.”
