Camana Bay will become home to a new weekly five-kilometre parkrun called ‘Festival Green’ offering residents and visitors a free, non-competitive way to get active.
The run will take place every Saturday at 6:30am from 29 August, with participants gathering on the Festival Green before following a scenic route along the Camana Bay Nature Loop.
The volunteer-led event is open to people of all ages and fitness levels, whether they want to walk, jog or run the 5km route.
While participants will be timed, there will be no winners or prizes, with runners encouraged to complete the course at their own pace.
“The Festival Green parkrun is about much more than walking or running five kilometres or participating in a traditional competitive race,” local organiser Robert Duggan said in a Dart press release on 11 August.
“It’s about creating a welcoming space where the whole community can come together every Saturday morning, enjoy being active at whatever pace suits them and build healthy habits that last.”
Parkrun has 2,800 locations worldwide, with millions of people taking part in its free weekly events.
Participants register once online to receive a personal barcode, which they bring to events to record their participation and track their progress.
Duggan said the Cayman Islands event could also attract visitors who take part in parkruns while travelling.
“Parkrunners love exploring new events when they travel, and we hope the Festival Green parkrun becomes a must-visit destination for participants looking to experience the unique beauty and hospitality of the Cayman Islands while staying active,” he said.
The initiative is supported by the Cayman Islands Government as part of efforts to promote a healthier and more active community.
Robert Weekly, Dart’s senior vice president of asset management, said the event fits with Camana Bay’s focus on active living.
“Hosting the Festival Green parkrun builds on that vision by giving residents and visitors a free, inclusive way to make physical activity part of their weekly routine,” he said.
The event will rely on volunteers to help with timing, marshalling the course and welcoming participants.
Those interested in taking part or volunteering can register through the parkrun website.
