My eID office opens in Savannah for eastern residents

Residents in eastern Grand Cayman can now apply for My eID closer to home following the opening of a new identification card office in Savannah.

The new office opened at the Savannah Post Office on 3 August and will serve residents in Savannah, Bodden Town, Newlands and surrounding eastern districts.

The move is intended to reduce the need for residents to travel to George Town to apply for, renew or receive support for their identification cards.

Located at 1687 Shamrock Road, the office is open Monday to Friday from 9:30am to noon and from 1pm to 4pm.

Saturday appointments are also available from 9:30am to noon, giving residents the option to enrol outside standard working hours.

Acting social development minister Heather Bodden said the additional location makes the service more accessible for people balancing work and family commitments.

“Savannah is my home, and it means a great deal to see My eID services brought directly to this community,” she said in a press release on 4 August.

“For too long, many residents have had to take time away from work or family commitments just to travel into George Town for the issuance of an identification card.

“By introducing a convenient enrolment and issuance location at the Savannah Post Office, along with Saturday appointments, government is demonstrating that it is listening to the needs of working families and making essential services more accessible.”

The My eID card is a government-issued identification card that allows residents to verify their identity and access a growing range of digital and in-person government services.

It also provides a form of photo identification for residents who do not drive and may not have another government-issued photo ID, including some children, students and older people.

The programme is being introduced in phases as part of the government’s wider digital transformation strategy. It is currently available to Caymanians, civil servants, permanent residents and eligible dependants.

Ian Tibbetts, director of eGovernment, said the Savannah office will make it easier for residents in the eastern districts to enrol.

“Bringing My eID services to the Savannah Post Office is a welcome opportunity to serve the eastern districts, and in particular working people who have had to take time out of their working day to enrol,” said Tibbetts.

“With Saturday appointments now available, residents can enrol at a time that suits them, not only during standard office hours.”

The Department of eGovernment is encouraging applicants to begin the process online by submitting their information and booking an appointment before visiting the office.

Residents are also advised to review the application guide and gather the required documents in advance to help speed up processing and card issuance.
