Chief Justice Margaret Ramsay-Hale has acknowledged the essential role of the Cayman Islands’ 911 dispatchers, describing them as the “first of first responders”.
She made the remarks at a recognition ceremony hosted by the Department of Public Safety Communications on 7 April, marking the start of National Telecommunicator Week.
According to a press release on 11 April, the chief justice said their work, though often unseen, is fundamental to both public safety and the effective administration of justice.
Their professionalism, accuracy and judgment, she noted, have a direct bearing on the functioning of the criminal justice system.
Drawing on her experience on the bench, the chief justice highlighted the close operational link between the courts and the Department of Public Safety Communications.
She said initiatives such as electronic monitoring of defendants rely significantly on the work of 911 personnel.
They enable the courts to balance public safety with rehabilitative approaches, including bail supervision and participation in specialised court programmes, she added.
The chief justice further noted that while such systems continue to evolve, they demonstrate the extent to which public safety and judicial processes are interconnected, requiring ongoing collaboration among stakeholders.
In closing, the chief justice expressed appreciation on behalf of the judiciary and the community it serves for the dedication and service of 911 personnel.
The annual National Telecommunicator Week recognises the contributions of telecoms professionals, particularly those who support emergency response services.
