Intellectual property (IP) experts spoke to more than 200 students about the dangers and issues around buying counterfeits and how to use AI properly.
Law firm HSM Group visited John Gray High School in Olympic Way on 24 September as part of the International Trademark Association’s (INTA) Unreal Campaign.
HSM senior IP manager Mrinali Menon and IP administrative assistant Shirly Ramirez led a special presentation covering the importance of trademarks, IP and the dangers of counterfeit products.
They stressed the economic impacts of people buying knockoffs and how these inferior products can affect people’s health as well as safety.
The presentation included a game of ‘spot a fake’, where pupils had to guess which one was the fake between two similar looking products.
Menon also touched on plagiarism, technology, IP and the best practices when it comes to using AI platforms.
HSM IP managing partner Huw Moses said in a press release: “At HSM, we believe it is important to help students understand the risks of counterfeiting and the value of protecting intellectual property.
“By raising awareness early, we can encourage respect for creativity and informed choices.”
The INTA Unreal Campaign is taught all over the world and is specifically geared towards 14- to 23-year-olds.
HSM, a specialist intellectual property law practice based in the Cayman Islands, has delivered several school presentations on IP, trademarks and counterfeits over the years.
