Inter Miami CF, current MLS champions and home of Lionel Messi, brought their U20 Academy to Cayman for a friendly game against the Cayman Men’s National Team on 22 August. Ending in a 1-1 draw, the exhibition doubled as an opening ceremony for field two of the Camana Bay Sports Complex.
With hundreds in attendance, the game kicked off with high intensity, reflecting the energy of the fans. Inter Miami managed to secure an early lead with a goal scored in the 15th minute against Cayman goalkeeper Ramon Sealy.
The first half continued with Inter Miami maintaining the majority of possession. However, Cayman looked threatening on the counter attack with Jaccobi Tugman leading the front line with pace. Cayman were successful in bringing players into play through the use of hold-up-play, but were ultimately unable to produce a goal for themselves.
With one sub for Inter Miami and two for Cayman at halftime, the second half began with the same intensity as the first. Utilizing the unlimited sub rule, Cayman made an additional five subs in the 50th minute to inject energy into their side. This proved successful with a great header scored by centre-back substitute Dominic Owens from a corner in the 59th minute.
The equaliser changed the dynamic of the game, forcing Inter Miami to take more risks with the ball and allowing Cayman to increase their percentage of possession.
A sub in the 65th minute and a further three in the 68th by Inter Miami showed their intention to take back the lead in the game, hoping to match Cayman with impact from the bench. Following suit, Cayman substituted their whole front three in the 70th minute, indicating a desire to clinch the game for themselves.
Despite major chances on both ends of the pitch, the second half ultimately ended without any further goals, concluding the game at a 1-1 draw. The fixture demonstrated Cayman’s ability to compete against professional academies while providing pre-season fitness for both teams.
