Gloria McField-Nixon was sworn in as the Cayman Islands’ new deputy governor on 8 July, becoming the first woman to hold the office.
McField-Nixon took the oath of office during a special Cabinet ceremony on Wednesday, 8 July, a day after the retirement of former deputy governor Franz Manderson, who stepped down following four decades of public service.
Governor Jane Owen welcomed McField-Nixon to the role, describing her as an experienced public servant with a clear vision for supporting the civil service and building on the work of her predecessor, according to a government press release.
Before her appointment, McField-Nixon served as chief officer in the Portfolio of the Civil Service, overseeing government-wide human resources policy, public sector reform and corporate governance.
She has also served in senior roles across several government ministries, including finance and tourism, and has regularly acted as deputy governor in recent years.
Speaking after being sworn in, McField-Nixon said the appointment was not only a personal milestone but also reflected the support of colleagues throughout her public service career.
“As the first woman to serve in this role, I hope this appointment inspires young ladies to dream boldly and to see themselves in leadership positions and professions where women are not yet fully represented,” she said.
McField-Nixon succeeds Manderson, who retired on 7 July after serving as deputy governor since 2018 and spending 44 years in Cayman’s civil service.
