Cayman remains sixth-largest US Treasury holder despite fall

The Cayman Islands remained the sixth-largest foreign holder of US Treasury securities in June, despite reducing its holdings by $18.2 billion during the month.

According to United States Department of the Treasury data, the jurisdiction held US$453.1 billion in Treasury securities at the end of the month, down from $471.3bn in May.

The June figure was also below the $471.6bn held in April and $460.1bn in March. However, it was above the $440.9bn recorded in June 2025.

Cayman ranked sixth among the major foreign holders of US Treasury securities in June.

Japan held the largest amount at $1.1167 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom at $939.9bn and mainland China at $633.4bn.

Belgium held $482.5bn and Canada held $459.6bn. Luxembourg followed Cayman with $434.2bn.

Cayman’s holdings have fluctuated over the past year.

They fell to $421.6bn in December 2025 before rising to $433.2bn in January, $443.4bn in February, $460.1bn in March and $471.6bn in April.

The June decline came as foreign residents reduced their holdings of US Treasury bills by $29bn. Their holdings of all dollar-denominated short-term US securities and other custody liabilities also fell by $4.9bn.

Banks’ own net dollar-denominated liabilities to foreign residents decreased by $34.4bn in June.

At the same time, foreign residents increased their holdings of long-term US securities by $207.1bn. Private foreign investors accounted for $169.8bn of those net purchases, while foreign official institutions accounted for $37.3bn.

After adjustments including estimated foreign portfolio acquisitions of US stocks through stock swaps, overall net foreign purchases of long-term securities were estimated at $172.7bn.

The Treasury reported a net TIC inflow of $133.5bn for June. Net foreign private inflows were $85bn, while net foreign official inflows were $48.4bn.

US residents also increased their holdings of long-term foreign securities through $34.4bn in net purchases.

The next TIC release covering July is scheduled for 16 September.
